How to Promote a Car Wash Fundraiser (and Get More Cars)

The best-promoted car washes do three things: tell people ahead of time where they’ll already look (local groups, school and team channels, a map listing), give every volunteer something easy to share, and make the lot impossible to miss on the day with big signs and energetic sign wavers.

A week before: get it everywhere people look

  • List it on Charity Car Wash Map — free and takes a minute. Your listing gets its own shareable page with the date, time, directions and your cause.
  • Local Facebook groups and community pages — most towns have a “what’s happening” group. Post the details and a photo from last year’s wash if you have one.
  • Nextdoor in the neighborhoods around your location.
  • School, team, church or club channels — newsletters, parent group chats, announcements.
  • The host business — ask if they’ll post it on their social pages or put a flyer by the register. They benefit from the foot traffic too.

Make it easy to share

Give every volunteer a ready-to-send message and a link. For example:

“Our team is washing cars this Saturday 9–2 at the AutoZone on Main St — $10 a car, all for new uniforms! Details + directions: [your listing link]”

Ask each volunteer to text it to five people. Personal texts beat public posts.

The day of: signs and sign wavers

  • Place signs at the corners before you open, facing traffic from both directions, a block or two away.
  • Keep two or three sign wavers on the curb all day — safely back from traffic, in bright shirts. Energy is contagious; smiles and waves pull cars in.
  • Make the cause obvious: “Help send our band to State!” works better than “Car Wash.”
  • Post live updates (“Line is short right now!”) in the same groups.

After: build next year’s audience

  • Post a thank-you with the total raised and a team photo.
  • Thank the host business by name.
  • Save the contacts of people who asked “when’s the next one?”
