How Much to Charge for a Charity Car Wash

Most charity car washes charge a flat $5–$20 per car, with $10 the most common sweet spot, or ask for “donations” with a suggested amount. A clear, simple price on a big sign gets more cars to pull in than a complicated menu. Here’s how to choose.

Flat price vs. donation

Flat price (e.g. $10)By donation
Best forBusy lots, fast linesCommunity-minded crowds, churches, benefit washes
ProsPredictable, quick to handle, easy to put on a signGenerous drivers often give more than a set price; no one feels priced out
ConsLeaves generous drivers’ extra money on the table unless you ask for tipsSome people give very little; slower at the cash box

A popular middle ground: a flat price plus a visible tip jar and a line like “Every extra dollar goes to the team.”

Pricing trucks, SUVs and extras

  • Cars: one base price.
  • Trucks, SUVs and minivans: a few dollars more — they take longer.
  • Upgrades: tire shine, interior wipe-down or window cleaning for a small add-on. Only offer extras if you have enough volunteers; a long line loses cars.

Pre-selling tickets

Selling car wash tickets in the weeks before the event locks in money even if it rains or the lot is slow. Volunteers sell them to family, neighbors and coworkers; the buyer redeems on the day (or simply donates). Some commercial car washes also run charity ticket programs where your group sells prepaid wash tickets and keeps a share — ask locally.

Take more than cash

  • Print a large QR code for Venmo, Cash App or PayPal and tape it next to the price sign.
  • If your organization has a card reader, bring it and a charged phone.
  • Keep change in small bills — nothing slows a line like breaking a $50.

Tell people what the money does

“$10 = one kid’s tournament fee” or “Every car helps our animal shelter buy food” turns a price into a reason. Put your cause on the sign and on your car wash listing — we show it right on the map.
